Jajpur: An under-trial prisoner died Friday en route to the hospital for treatment in Jajpur district. The deceased has been identified as Gandharba Swain, a resident of Paikarapur village under Badachana police limits in Jajpur district.
Sources said that Gandharba was arrested December 4 last year when he was planning a heist with his gang in Haripur under Sukinda police limits. However, police nabbed them while they were hiding in a forest. Initially Gandharba and others hurled bombs at the police and tried to flee the spot. However, one of the bombs exploded in Gandharba’s hand only leaving him injured. Seeing his condition, Gandharba’s accomplices fled the spot.
Police arrested Gandharba and got him admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, doctors had to amputate a portion of his right hand. After his health condition improved he was taken to the sub-jail in Jajpur Road. However, his condition deteriorated Friday morning and as he was being shifted to the hospital, Gandharba breathed his last. Doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
A probe has been launched to ascertain the cause of Gandharba’s death.
