Undertrial booked for affair with woman prisoner

Titlagarh: In a shocking incident that is bound to raise eyebrows over the safety of jail inmates in the state, an under-trial prisoner (UTP) allegedly tricked a woman inmate after developing physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage at Titlagarh sub-jail in Bolangir district, a report said.

The matter came to fore after the survivor lodged a complaint at Titilagarh police station, late December 19 night, last year. The woman was released from the jail the same day and lodged the complaint in the police station at late night. Titilagarh SDPO Surendra Nath Satapathy confirmed the development

According to the FIR, the woman was lodged in the Titilagarh sub-jail after she was arrested on charge of domestic violence with her husband and in-laws.  She had been lodged in the jail for around 45 days and was released after a court granted her bail.

The accused Tirthankar Putel alias Papu has been lodged in the jail for over a year after his arrest in a case of GST fraud. The victim has alleged that during her stay in the jail she came in contact with Putel.

Later, Putel established physical relation with the woman on the promise of marrying her, she mentioned in the FIR, adding that two staffers of the jail and a person working at the ADJ court were aware about the matter.

The complainant further alleged that she was talking to Papu over mobile phone after her release from the jail and has the call recordings in her possession.

The woman was also visiting him in the jail at regular intervals. However, the accused suddenly started avoiding the woman, contrary to his promise of marrying her.

A medical examination of the woman was carried out Saturday while her statement was recorded Sunday by the police, IIC Prabhat Ranjan Mohanty said. The accused will also be taken for medical examination. Further investigations are on, the IIC said.
