Undertrial flees SCB

Cuttack: Exposing security loopholes, a 22-year-old under-trial prisoner (UTP) Wednesday escaped from SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) where he was admitted Sunday.

The UTP M Nani hailed from Andhra Pradesh and was lodged at Jajpur sub-jail.

According to SCB’s medicine department associate professor Sri Prasad Mohanty, Nani had complained of hematemesis or vomiting blood and so, he was brought from Jajpur and admitted here.

“Nani was kept under observation at the new building of the medicine department,” he added, however, when his complains were found to be false he was to be discharged.

“His endoscopy reports and other examinations falsified his claims, he added.

Nani managed to flee the premises at around 12 in the noon.

Sources said Nani’s hands were cuffed to his bed.

Four gunmen, who were deployed at the hospital to keep a watch on him, were busy on their phones when he escaped.

Nani cashed in on the opportunity and fled his room after unlocking the handcuffs. Sources added Mangalabag police are at their wit’s end to trace Nani. “Although, there is no formal complaint lodged with us about the issue, efforts are on to track him down,” Mangalabag inspector in-charge Arun Kumar Swain said.
