New York: Teenager Bianca Andreescu stunned 23-time major champion Serena Williams 6-3, 7-5 to become Canada’s first Grand Slam singles champion here in the US Open finals.
Williams was denied a record-equaling 24th Slam title as the 19-year-old Andreescu Saturday became the youngest Grand Slam winner since Maria Sharapova at the 2006 US Open.
While it was the fourth successive defeat in the finals for Willams, Andreescu tied Monica Seles, who lifted the 1990 Roland Garros trophy in her fourth major, for the record as the fastest player to grab a first Slam crown in the Open era.
The win made Andreescu the first ever Canadian woman to win the US Open.
While things on the court seem to be going pretty well, Bianca is making waves off the court as well.
Followed by nearly 400,000 on Instagram, the 19-year-old regularly posts updates on her handle to keep fans updated on her private life.
