New Delhi: Meena Harris, an American lawyer and the niece of US Vice President Kamala Harris, Friday responded to protests against her by a fringe right-wing Hindu nationalist outfit.
Harris has been very vocal on social media about her support for farmers in India amid widespread protests across New Delhi against the new farm laws.
Activists from ‘Hindu United Front’ burned posters of Harris, pop-star Rihanna and teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg for voicing their concerns for Indian farmers.
“I spoke out in support of human rights for Indian farmers, and look at the response,” Harris tweeted Thursday, sharing a photo by Reuters journalist Danish Siddiqui.
“I won’t be intimidated, and I won’t be silenced,” she added.
“Weird to see a photo of yourself burned by an extremist mob but imagine what they would do if we lived in India. I’ll tell you—23 yo labor rights activist Nodeep Kaur was arrested, tortured & sexually assaulted in police custody. She’s been detained without bail for over 20 days,” Harris said in another tweet highlighting the plight of labour rights activist Nodeep Kaur who has been detained by authorities without bail for over 20 days.
36-year-old Harris has been tweeting regularly on India’s farmers’ protest ever since Rihanna brought global attention to the movement earlier this week.
“Why aren’t we talking about this?” tweeted Rihanna with a news item covering the protest.
“We ALL should be outraged by India’s internet shutdowns and paramilitary violence against farmer protesters,” Harris tweeted.
