An event to woo girls towards science, tech

Bhubaneswar: Vigyan Jyoti, a programme meant to inspire girls to study science and technology, was organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar Monday at its Argul campus which was inaugurated by AIIMS Bhubaneswar director Gitanjali Batmanabane.
IIT director RV Raja Kumar presided over the Vigyan Jyoti programme which is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Kumar welcomed all girl participants for their choice to pursue science and technology as part of their career. He thanked the DST for initiating the programme with a noble objective of encouraging girl students across the country.
He also called upon the students to participate whole-heartedly to gather knowledge more than securing marks in the examination and utilise this programme for their overall development.
Prof Batmanabane urged the students to pursue their career as a passion. Hard work and passionate learning can make them successful in life through their dreams.
As many as 30 girl students of Class XI (Science stream) selected from Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jajpur, Balasore, Keonjhar, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Malkangiri, Bolangir, Mayurbhanj and Nuapada districts were part of the programme.
IIT-Bhubaneswar also made a special provision for five Class XI (Science stream) girl students from its six adopted villages under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan programme to participate on supernumerary basis. The students are being provided full support (travel, boarding, and lodging) to attend the programme. A scholarship of Rs 5000 will be given to the participants on completion of the programme. Prominent female scientists, faculties, entrepreneurs and administrators have been invited to deliver lectures and conduct interactive sessions with the students.
