India is a country known for its heritage, culture, rituals and traditions. More importantly, in India all the communities have the freedom to observe the rituals as per their norms.
Marriages across all strata of society in India are conducted with pomp and gaiety on most occasions. However, you will be surprised to know that there is a place in India where the villagers organise marriages of their dead children. It is done with the same pomp and gaiety that is seen during real marriages.
Yes, this tradition is followed in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh for ages. This custom is carried out by people of the ‘Natbaji’ community. Seniors of the community say that the ritual brings good luck to the living members of the family.
According to information available, in this tradition both bride and groom have breathed their last. It is very strange to hear that people also find deceased groom for their deceased daughter. The whole society congregates to celebrate the ceremony.
But then comes the catch line. Puppets are used during the marriage ceremony. The rituals are followed very carefully during the programme.
By doing this, the community believed that the dead will get salvation in the other world also.
