Villagers start sit-in protest, disrupt coal production in Angul

Talcher: Hundreds of villagers from Lokeipasi under this block in Angul district Monday started a cease work strike alleging that MCL has failed to fulfil its promises.

They also demanded immediate employment to the family members of the displaced people.

The villagers staged a sit-in at time office, CHP, railway siding of Bharatpur coal mines, affecting the production and transportation of coal.

Sources said for the acquisition of all land and houses in Lokeipasi by MCL in 2011, a 4-1 notice was issued. But no benefits in the form of compensation or employment have been given to the affected villagers.

A meeting between villagers and MCL officials was held at Dera guest house June 1.

It was decided that in the first phase medical tests of 197 beneficiaries would be completed by June 15 and by June 20 their FDs would be sent. Similarly, for the employment of displaced people all required process would finish and FDs would be sent to them by the end of July.

This apart, the authority also promised job cards for the nominees below 18 years of age and pipe-water supply to the village pond.

The deadline has already expired but the authorities are yet to honour their promises, sources added.
