Sambalpur: At least 10 students of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) at Burla in Sambalpur were debarred from appearing the examinations while 52 students were asked to pay fine Thursday after a video of ragging of the freshers by the senior students of the university went viral.

The matter came to fore after vice-chancellor Atal Choudhury on the basis of a preliminary probe debarred 10 students from taking examinations for a year while ordering a probe into the matter.

This apart, 52 students have been asked to pay penalty of Rs 2,000 each. The order came following an emergency meeting of the university authorities.

Our correspondent from Bhubaneswar adds that the state government Thursday ordered an inquiry into alleged incident of ragging of junior students by their seniors.

The government action came after the alleged incident of ragging, involving about 50 junior engineering students, came to the fore after a video went viral on social media recently.

The video purportedly showed that the junior students were made to dance and do sit-ups by holding their ears. They were also beaten up by the senior students when they resisted. The juniors were also asked to run on the staircase while some seniors chased and beat them with sticks. It also showed a junior student’s shirt being ripped off by a senior student. The ragging horror did not stop there as the freshers were made to dance in undergarments.

The ragging took place at a function that was organised to welcome the junior students.

“The registrar of the VSSUT has been asked to conduct a probe into the alleged incident and action will be taken after receiving the report,” Skill Development & Technical Education Minister Premananda Nayak told reporters.

When contacted the vice-chancellor said he has ordered for a probe and action will be taken after submission of the probe report.
