Talcher: A notorious criminal, Sushant Kumar Nayak alias Jhamu, 40, from Ramadia village under Nisha police limits in Angul district, was apprehended and injured in a police encounter late Wednesday night. Nayak, who is wanted in several criminal cases across Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, and Deogarh districts, had previously fired at police officers during a market raid January 22, and fled.
Acting on a tip-off, Talcher police led by Inspector-in-Charge Digbijay Biswal and supported by the Angul district special squad raided the Talabeda forest where Nayak and his associate, Prafulla Nayak, were hiding. When asked to surrender, Nayak fired two rounds at the police, but no injuries were reported.
In retaliation, Sub-Inspector AS Jena of the special squad fired a warning shot. However, Nayak continued firing, forcing the police to shoot him in the left leg. Prafulla Nayak, who attacked police with a sickle, was also subdued. Sushant Nayak was first taken to Talcher Sub-Divisional Hospital and then shifted to Angul DHH. He was later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.
