Waste materials harming Daringbadi

Daringbadi: The heavy rush of travellers from many parts of Odisha and even from outside the state during the winter months sees this town witness a rapid increase in the volume of solid waste. Daringbadi is often fondly called the ‘Kashmir of Odisha’ and is a very popular destination among tourists. From September to March, the Odisha government organises eco retreat programs for travellers across the globe, which also include accommodation and other facilities. Reportedly, while visiting the attractive spots nearby, some of the travellers and locals noticed garbage dumps inside the Nilgiri forest.

Among the things found were empty liquor bottles, plastic containers, chicken bones, and many other varieties of trash. Local self-help groups (SHGs) are collaborating with the Odisha government to take care of popular tourist spots like Daringbadi. They also collect money from visitors to this place. However, locals have now become apprehensive about how the money is being spent after coming across the garbage dumps.

Sources said that the block development officer has asked sarpanchs of the areas from where the garbage dumps have been found to take stock of the situation. They have also been asked to come up with plans for the disposal of garbage in a proper manner. Locals have demanded that the entire Daringbadi be made plastic-free.
