Water level in Hirakud reservoir recedes

Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam authorities at Burla are concerned about the gradual decline of water level at the reservoir.

Sources said the water level in the dam was at 600.12 ft till 9 pm Monday as against 600.67 ft by 6 pm Saturday.

Assessing the situation, the authorities are of the view that the water level might go below 600 ft Tuesday.

The average inflow of Mahanadi water into the reservoir in the last 24 hours (till 9 am Monday) was 6,171 cusecs per second while the outflow was 3,657 cusecs through the Bargarh canal, 76 cusecs through Sambalpur canal, 630 cusecs through Sasan canal and 10,264 cusecs through the power channel.

“Since the discharge of Mahanadi water is more than the inflow of water, water level in the reservoir will come down further if there is no heavy rain in the upper catchment area,” the dam authorities said.

The optimum water level of the Hirakud reservoir is 630 ft.
