Champua: Members of the District Child Welfare Committee (DCWC) scuttled a child marriage bid and rescued a minor girl at Kodagadia under Champua block in Keonjhar Wednesday.
Reports said, Maheswar Mohant, a resident of the village, had made all arrangement for marriage of her 16 year-old daughter with a youth of Shankarpur Wednesday.
However, the Child Welfare Committee had got a tip-off about the marriage.
On behalf of the committee, Madhuribala Swain, Damayanti Mohant, Jagdish Karua, Anganwadi supervisor Sunita Mohant and Ullupi Nayak rushed to the village and advised the family to stop the marriage because the girl had not come of age.
Initially, father of the girl was unwilling to stop it.
ASI Subash Behera convinced Mohant that marrying off a minor girl is a cognizable office.
The DCWC got a written undertaking from the father that he would not marry off her daughter until she attains the age of 18.
