Mumbai: Hindi film star, Rajkummar Rao turned nostalgic while recalling his struggle to establish himself as an actor. Rajkummar Rao has recently revealed during an interview that he initially did not have enough money to eat or to buy clothes. The actor made his debut in Hindi films in 2010 with Love, Sex Aur Dhokha.
The actor has said that he and a group of friends stayed in a small flat in Mumbai in his upcoming days. “My share was Rs 7,000 and initially, I thought I was paying too much. There were plenty of times when I used to get notifications stating that I had Rs 18-20 in my account. Those were torrid times, keeping in mind that I needed Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 just to eke out a bare living,” Rajkummar Rao has been quoted as saying.
“It used to be tough times for me. I come from a very humble middle class background and there was a time in school when I didn’t have money and my teachers paid my school fees for two years,” the actor added.
Rajkummar Rao graduated from Delhi University and studied acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Describing those days of struggle Rajkummar has said that he did not have enough money to buy a good shirt. “FTII is a really big community. Sometimes, we used to borrow money and other times share meals. I didn’t have enough money to even buy proper T-shirts,” Rajkummar stated.
Rajkummar Rao has also said how he used to travel on bikes and use rose water to clean his face for audition.
Rajkummar Rao may have debuted with Love, Sex Aur Dhokha but his breakthrough role was in the 2013 film Kai Po Che!. Since, then however, there has been no looking back for the actor. He has played important roles in films like CityLights, Shahid and Aligarh. The role in Shahid fetched him the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2019. Rajkummar, who was last seen in Judgementall Hai Kya, will next feature in Made In China, which will hit the screens October 25.
