Bhubaneswar: The latest version of the song Dilbar of the 90’s iconic song Dilbar Dilbar from Sirf Tum (1999) starring Sushmita Sen and Sanjay Kapoor has been topping the charts. Its groovy tunes clocked more than 20 million hits in less than 24 hours, making it the first song to achieve the feat.
Taking the queue from that, a rendition of the song was recently sung by singer Barnali Hota in which dancer Roshni Naik performed the Odissi dance.
The dancer, who is presently pursuing her computer engineering from KIIT University, has received Odissi training from Orissa Dance Academy. It may be worth mentioning here that this is her first such project.
Twenty-year-old Roshni is a member of the dance group ‘The Ensemble Crew’ with whom she performs in college tours and other shows. However, she said she has not tried anything out-of-the-box type steps, rather she relied on simple moves.
“It could have been an uphill task had I tried to match Nora Fatehi’s dance number”, she chuckled. I just went with the flow and thanks to Barnali that she kept it subtle without shedding even a tinge of its peppy nature, she added.
Roshni opined that such experimentation is necessary to bring some freshness in the songs “otherwise the masses will not lend their ears anymore”.
Recently, many Odissi artistes performed the dance on popular English songs.
For instance, in March last year, Odissi dancer Pallavi Das of Guru Pankaj Udra Sanskruti Academy, an ardent follower of the Game of Thrones series, performed on the show’s theme song. The dance video coupled with the show’s popularity garnered rave reviews and in no time became a sensation.
Likewise, a few days ago Odissi dancers of detour Odisha performed on the song Shape of You by Ed Sheeran.
Daughter of Kishore Chandra Naik and Baijayanti Naik, Roshni does not confine her interests to dancing. She goes by Miss Vogue in the social media, where she posts her videos while trying her hands on fashion blogging. “I want to pursue it more seriously after completing my studies,” she said.
Encouraging others to create such videos, Roshni said, “Barnali didn’t go to any studio to record the song instead she used one of the recording apps and applied reverberation effects to it.” “One only needs to be a bit tech savvy,” she added.
