When it’s time to take a stand

When it’s time to take a stand

Ours is a star-struck society where cricket, cinema and politics are a binding force. If you are a celebrity, especially an actor, people always want you to take a stand on issues. However, a recent comment made by actor Ranbir Kapoor about politics has sparked a row. The actor said that he was least concerned about the political climate in the country and wouldn’t be bothered till he continued to get uninterrupted supply of water and electricity in his home. He was criticised for his comments even by people of his fraternity. In this context, Orissa POST spoke to a couple of young actors of the Odia film industry to gauge their views on political awareness.

Aman Parashar, who plays an important character in Chhabirani, an upcoming political drama on the sensational gang rape and murder of a journalist’s wife in the 80s, doesn’t subscribe to Ranbir’s views.

“Politicians, cricketers and actors draw massive public attention in our country. They enjoy sizeable fan following and are idolised by many. Therefore, their conduct should be such that it can be emulated by a common man,” he said.

“Whether you are a cricketer or a movie star, your remarks will always attract public scrutiny. So, there is no way you can remain indifferent towards the political scenario in the country,” Aman added.

Celebrities should surely let fans know what is right or wrong without any bias, the actor further said.

Popular television actor Sunanda Parida said it is very important to take a stand and more so as an actor as people closely follow their moves.

“When a politician makes a comment, it is more often than not construed as motivated and made for a party’s gain. But the opinions of actors who are not affiliated to any political party are taken seriously by the public. Therefore, they should have an impartial view of issues,” she added.

Without naming anyone, she said there are some actors, mainly those who are out of work, who have joined various political parties. “It is certainly not to serve the people but to revive their fading career,” added Sunanda.

Actor Bickyy Mishra said if a doctor, engineer or persons from other spectrums of society can enter the political arena, there is no reason why actors shouldn’t do it.  He cited some examples of actors like NT Ramarao of Andhra Pradesh and MG Ramachandran and Jayalalitha of Tamilnadu who were hugely successful politicians. However, he felt that it is not necessary to formally join any political party to serve the people.

“The current trend is that most actors get involved in election campaigns for some political parties only to make a fast buck during the polls. Actors don’t gain popularity overnight as they really work hard to reach a certain level. Therefore, they shouldn’t take their success for granted and campaign for any Tom, Dick and Harry whom they don’t even know properly, just to make some money. It is better to work sincerely for your profession, be politically aware and take an unbiased stand on issues,” he added.
