WiFi coverage gives Capital IT ‘backbone’

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Monday launched the city-wide Bhubaneswar Me Wi Fi project under the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited undertaking to make the city accessible across its major happening places.
In the first phase, 100 hotspots with 275 access points (APs) went live. The hotspots are located at major locations between KIIT Square to Governor House, Acharya Vihar to AG Square, Sishu Bhawan to Vani Vihar and Nalco Square to Acharya Vihar. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said, “Today is a historic day for Bhubaneswar. The city of temples will have an IT backbone comparable to the best modern cities in the world. I call upon the youth to utilise these world-class facilities and aim big in their spheres of work.”

As part of his commitment for the 3Ts – technology, transparency and teamwork — he also announced that similar free Wi Fi facilities would soon be available under the municipal corporations of Cuttack, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Rourkela and Puri.

A Wi Fi hotspot would be able to handle maximum 150 users at a given point of time with internet speed at 2 mega bytes per second (MBPS). Access to 250 MB of data will be free for any user on a given day. To access beyond 250 MB data daily, a consumer has to log in and choose a payment plan.

According to sources, after Phase-II there would be 518 hotspots across the city to complete the network. With all three phases, the city will have 1,800 APs.

However, not every inch of the 80-km priority road network will come under Wi-Fi; one has to be within 100, 200 or 300 metres of the access points to be able to log in to the network.
