Wild elephants trample farmer to death in Sundargarh

Rourkela: A farmer was trampled to death by wild elephants at Modipara village under Rajgangpur forest division in Sundargarh district Monday morning.

Gobardhan Lakra (50) had gone to his agricultural land Saturday night to guard it. A herd of wild pachyderms entered his farmland and Lakra tried to drive away the jumbos.

However, he was crushed to death by the elephants. Locals, who spotted his body lying at the agricultural land, immediately informed the police.

Police reached the spot, seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.

In another incident, a herd of more than 10 elephants barged into a government sawmill at Kalunga under Kuanramunda forest range of Rourkela reserve forest.

The presence of the wild jumbos inside the sawmill has triggered panic among the locals.

The Forest Department officials are trying to ward off the elephants from human settlements, reports said.
