Patna: With the collapse of two more bridges in Siwan and Saran districts Wednesday, a total of eight bridges have collapsed in the last 15 days in Bihar.

With the onset of monsoon and lack of maintenance, a total of eight bridges have collapsed in Bihar in the last 15 days. The state government, taking serious note of such incidents, has ordered a thorough probe to find out exact reasons behind a series of bridge collapses in Bihar in the last few days.

Those found guilty would be slapped with stringent punishment, the state government warned.

Two bridges collapsed in Saran and Siwan districts on Wednesday. A bridge over Dhamahi river collapsed near Dhodh Asthan temple under Janata Bazar police station area in Saran district. The bridge was constructed 10 years ago with local area development fund of legislator.

In another such incident, a portion of the bridge over Gandaki river collapsed in Deoria block of Siwan district. It was constructed in 1982-83 and repair work was in progress, said Deputy Development Commissioner Mukesh Kumar.

It appeared that rise in water level and strong current of Gandaki river could be the reason behind bridge collapse but the exact cause would be known only after inquiry, he stated.

As it is, a bridge had collapsed over Bund river in Khushi Dhangi village in Kishanganj district on last Saturday while another bridge in the district had also collapsed in Bansbari village on June 26. In similar incident, a bridge had collapsed in Araria district on June 18. Another small bridge on canal of Gandak river had collapsed in Siwan district on June 22 while an under construction bridge had collapsed in East Champaran district on June 23. A bridge had also collapsed in Madhubani district on June 27.

Collapse of eight bridges in the last 15 days in Bihar has become a big political issue for opposition in the tate.

All opposition parties in the state had slammed Nitish Kumar government for rampant corruption in administration which led to collapse of eight bridges in the last 15 days.
