Nayagarh: A woman was allegedly murdered by her in-laws for dowry at Chadheiyapalli village under Sarankul police limits in Nayagarh district. The deceased was identified as Puspanjali.
Puspanjali’s mother Jhumpa Sahu filed a complaint with the police, alleging that in-laws of her daughter killed her for a dowry of Rs 10,000, a gold chain and a car. Police registered a case of murder and detained Puspanjali’s husband Karunakar Nayak and mother-in law Aintha Nayak.
Puspanjali, the second daughter of Jhumpa Sahu of Chhatia village under Ranpur police limits was married to Karunakar of Chadhaiyapalli village seven months ago.
The groom’s side demanded a fresh dowry of Rs 20,000, a gold chain and a car. Puspanjali failed to give sufficient dowry and has given Rs 10,000, some gold ornaments and furniture as they were very poor. For this reason, Puspanjali was subjected to torture by her in-laws. In fact, they did not even feed her properly.
She reportedly revealed her ordeal to her parents and informed them of the torture that she had been undergoing but her parents brushed it aside while assuring her that everything would be normal after some days.
Some villagers had given information to Jhumpa about her daughter that she has been admitted to District Head quarter Hospital (DHH) due to ill health. By the time Jhumpa reached the district headquarters hospital to see her daughter, the latter was dead.
On the other hand, Karunakar claimed that Puspanjali slipped from the roof while trying to retrieve pickles.
On being informed, the police reached the spot and held Karunakar and his mother after an investigation. The actual reason of the death will be ascertained after going through the post mortem report, said IIC Kiran Hembram.
