Woman ‘burnt to death’ over dowry

Nimapara: A charred body of a woman was found at her residence in Gokanpur under Nandankanan police limits Sunday morning. The deceased was identified as Rashmita Padhiary, 21.

The deceased’s father, Gurucharan Jena, Sunday lodged a complaint with Nandankanan police against Rashmita’s in-laws alleging that the latter doused his daughter with kerosene before setting her ablaze. However, Rashmita’s husband trashed the allegations and termed it as a ‘suicide’.

In his complaint, Gurucharan said, “I found Rashmita’s burnt body in front of her in-laws’ house after some of their neighbours informed me.”

Nandankanan police station inspector in-charge Rabindra Nath Meher reached the spot along with his team and detained Rashmita’s husband Ashish Padhiary, father-in-law Dibakar Padhiary and mother-in-law Bharati for interrogation. Police sent the body to Capital Hospital for post-mortem.

According to sources, Rashmita of Daruthenga village had tied knots with Ashish, son of Dibakar of Gokanpur, one-and-half-years ago.

Rashmita’s family members had given Rs 1 lakh and other household items as dowry during the marriage. However, her in-laws started demanding more dowry a year of the marriage and started torturing her, both mentally and physically, said the complainant.
