Chitrakonda: A pregnant woman of Chitrakonda cut-off area gave birth to a baby on a boat on the way to a hospital here in the wee hours of Sunday.
According to sources, Bati Khara, 26, the wife of Paramanand Khara of Doraghati village under Jodamba gram panchayat in Malkangiri district, complained of labour pain at around 3am.
However, the village surrounded by hills and river Silera doesn’t have road connectivity to reach the nearest Chitrakonda community health centre (CHC), following which the family members decided to take the woman by a boat to the CHC. The woman’s husband had to sail the boat himself as the sailor was not present.
The worried family members tried hard to reach the nearest spillway launch ramp, but the woman delivered a baby girl around 4 am on the way. After they reached the spillway launch ramp, the woman was carried to the CHC in a private vehicle. The condition of the newborn and her mother were reported to be stable.
On the other hand, no ASHA worker was present to attend the woman.
