Woman dies after consuming expired drugs

Malkangiri: A woman died after allegedly consuming an expired medicine prescribed to her by a pharmacist of a private clinic Saturday. The heartrending incident was reported from Paikiguda village near Mathili police limits in Malkangiri district Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Mashe Madkami (35), wife of Dambaru Madkami.

According to reports, Mashe was suffering from fever for the last few days. Due to financial constraints, the family had earlier approached the help of a local sorcerer to heal the fever. However, there was no improvement in her health condition. Unable to go to a hospital for check-up, Mashe remained in the house while her family members approached a private medical store and bought some medicines for her.

Unaware, that the medicine had expired long back, Mashe consumed the medicine bought by her family members from a medicine store in Kianga market. Soon after consuming the medicine, Mashe’s condition became serious. Worried family members rushed her to Mathili community health centre (CHC) where she died while undergoing treatment. After getting information, Mathili police seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.

A case was registered based on a complaint by the family members of the deceased and a probe was launched. The incident spread tension in the area as family members and relatives accused the private clinic of supplying an expired medicine to the patients, leading to the death of Mashe. They demanded probe and stringent action against the private clinic.
