Keonjhar: Resentment brewed in Benamunda village under Telkoi block in this district after a woman, bitten by a snake, died due to delay in availability of an ambulance Monday. The woman was identified as Gulapi Pingua, wife of daily wager Harish Pingua.
According to sources, the woman along with her family went to sleep as usual after dinner. Meanwhile, a snake slithered into the house and bit her. Hearing her screams, family members woke up and rushed her to Telkoi community health centre (CHC).
However, due to lack of facilities in the CHC, doctors referred her to the District Headquarters Hospital for better treatment. Being a daily wager, Pingua asked for an ambulance to shift the victim to the DHH, but in vain.
With the help of some relatives, he arranged money and hired a vehicle after which she was taken to the DHH. But, by then, it was too late and the woman succumbed after her arrival in the hospital, family members alleged.
Adding to the woes, there was no ambulance available in the DHH to take back the body. Pingua had to again hire a vehicle and take the body to his village for the last rites.
At least three people have died from snakebite in the last four days, reports said.
