Woman dies in elephant attack; locals stage road protest

Parjang: Tension erupts at Bhalumunda Chhak in Dhenkanal district since locals staged a road blockade protesting death of woman in elephant attack Monday.

According to sources, a woman was killed by a wild tusker at Khalibahal village of Kandarasinha panchayat under Dihadola forest section of Mahabiroda range in Dhenkanal Forest Division.

The deceased identified as Nirupama Biswal had gone for a morning walk at around 5.45 am today when the attack befell of her. Frightened Nirupama tried to escape but the tusker grabbed her with its truck and battered her against a tree following which she died on spot.

When Nirupama didn’t return home for long, her apprehensive husband went on a frantic search only to find Nirupama’s lifeless body lying on the roadside near their house.

Meanwhile, the agitators have demanded compensation for the bereaved family.

On receipt of information, police reached the road blockade site and pacified the irked mob. However, no forest official had reached the spot till filing of this report.
