Bolangir: A woman alleged died of starvation in Lathor area under Khaprakhol block in Bolangir district, reports said.
The deceased was identified as Kundi Sahu. With no house of her own, the woman was living at Harishankar Road Railway Station with her mother Uma Dei for the past couple of years.
Kundi and her mother used to beg at the railway station and in trains. However, they had nothing to eat for the past couple of days. Kundi, who was unmarried, had taken ill due to lack of food and later succumbed Saturday.
What is more shocking is that Kundi’s brother Lal Sahu had also died of starvation a few years back.
The government railway police registered a case of unnatural death in this regard and got the postmortem conducted. A voluntary organization, Right to Fight, performed the cremation of the deceased.
According to sources, Uma Dei, who originally hails from Katapali in Nuapada district, had left the village along with her daughter Kundi and son Lal a few years back due to acute poverty and started begging in nearby villages.
They took shelter near Harishankar Road Railway station and used to beg at the railway station and in trains. In 2012, Lal died due to alleged starvation.
