Sajanagad: A woman in Jharanaghati village under Berhampur police limits in Balasore was forced to flee her village with her family members after a villager warned of ostracising her and her family members as the police failed to act on her complaint, a report said.
The matter came to the fore after the woman was left to starve without food after fleeing her village and admitted to Nilagiri hospital in Balasore district in a critical condition, the report said.
The woman was identified as Chhabi Bindhani, 30, wife of a migrant labourer Raju Bindhani at Jharanaghati village under Pithahata panchayat of Nilagiri block and Berhampur police limits.
The woman admitted to the hospital narrated her ordeal before the media persons when they visited her and demanded justice for her and family members. However, police are yet to speak on the issue or register a case on her written complaint. The incident has spread anger and shockwaves in the district.
Reports said that Chhabi was staying with her three children at home in the absence of her husband. However, trouble began after a co-villager Bhilu Bagal and his family members suspected her fidelity and started abusing her. Bagal even threatened to ostracise her by depriving her of fire and water.
Shocked over the development, the woman informed her husband and lodged a complaint at the local police station, August 11.
Enraged over her move, Bagal banned her from using fire and water and threatened her family members of serious consequences. Panicked, she finally decided to leave the village as police did not act on her complaint even after two days.
Later, she along with her family members fled the village through the backyard of her house. Her health condition deteriorated after she failed to get any food after leaving her village. Later, she was admitted to the hospital.
