Woman gangraped in Bhanjanagar, four held

Bhanjanagar, Jan 7: Police Tuesday arrested four men for raping a 22-year-old woman Monday here in Ganjam district. The accused, identified as Badal Pradhan, Simanchal Patnaik, Prashant Panigrahi of Belaguntha and Narayan Behera of Jiruli, were produced in a court after their medical examination.

Police sources said the victim was married to a man of Jagannathprasad who is currently serving jail term as an undertrial in a murder case in Bhanjanagar jail. Hence, she has been staying in Dasapalla, at her parents’ house for the past 11 months. The woman came to Bhanjanagar to meet her husband in jail Sunday, but had to spend the night in a local hospital as she failed to catch the last bus to Dasapalla.

The accused forcibly took her in an auto when the victim was walking to the nearby bus stand next morning. They took the woman to a secluded place in the area and took their turns on her. However, the victim managed to jump from the auto and raised an alarm at about 9 pm when the accused were taking her to Bhubaneswar, police said. Locals rescued the woman and caught all the accused. Based on the victim’s complaint, police arrested the four and seized the auto-rickshaw.
