Kendrapara: A woman has lodged an FIR against her husband at Kendrapara Sadar police station for giving her ‘triple talaq’ for not giving bearing a son and failing to fulfil his demand for a car as dowry.
This is the second such case in the district after an ordinance was cleared by President Ram Nath Kovind making triple talaq punishable with a jail term of up to three years and a fine.
IIC Kabuli Barik of Kendrapara Sadar police station said Rumana Permin, 25, of Mogalbag Mirjapatana village filed an FIR Friday against her husband for divorcing her through triple talaq.
Rumana visited the police station Saturday with her lawyers Sk. Abdul Nayeem and Sk. Asfaque Ali and Saira Mirza, state president of Talaki Mahila Sahayata Samiti.
Rumana said she married Salauddin Khan, son of Fakaruddin Khan, of Mogalbag Mirjapatana January 4, 2017. After the marriage, her father-in-law, her mother-in-law Firoza Bibi, and her husband asked her to get a car as dowry from her father.
She said her father expressed his inability to meet the demand. After this she was tortured mentally and physically. Her in-laws also threatened her that if she did not bring a car from her father, then they would get their son married elsewhere.
Rumana said was kept starving by her in-laws and husband, and in case of illness they did not provide her medical care, although her husband was running a medicine shop in Kendrapara town.
She said she gave birth to a girl October 11, 2017. Soon her in-laws and husband started torturing her as she failed to deliver a boy.
“As my in-laws did not want me or my girl, May 7 they tried to kill us by setting us afire using kerosene. I managed to escape and have been staying with my father at Mirapatana ever since,” said Rumana.
She said October 1, 2018 her mother Rijwana Begum, uncle Siddique Togarque and brother-in-law Sheikh Masi-ur-Rehman came with her to settle the matter and to leave her at her husband’s house.
But her husband after finding her in front of his house uttered ‘triple talaq’ in the presence of her mother, uncle and brother-in-law, she said.
Later, her relatives and family requested the villagers for help. But they asked her to take her things and leave.
Failing to get justice, Rumana returned disappointed. She said that if her husband accepts her she would like to stay with him.
She also said that as the reason for uttering talaq was not valid and as her husband had said it in anger.
Saira Mirja said Rumana had demanded action against her husband and in-laws if they refuse to accept her.
IIC Barik said an FIR was received. He said he will ask the husband and wife to come to the police station and would try to settle the matter. Barik said that if this doesn’t work the police would register a dowry torture case.
Last year, the SC had banned triple talaq. Following this, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha in December 2017 declaring triple talaq void.
