Woman home guard attempts self-immolation in front of Nayagarh Collectorate

Nayagarh: A woman home guard attempted to immolate herself Saturday evening here in front of the Collectorate over alleged mental harassment. Superintendent of Police Sashi Bhushan Satpathy and other personnel intervened when the woman was about to attempt light fire to her body after dousing herself with kerosene.

The home guard, a resident of Kacheri market here, who worked at various police stations, was transferred to Sadar police station six months ago. She was living with her husband Ranjit and three sons at the store room of the Sadar police station.

Ranjit alleged that his wife had been tortured since the transfer. He also alleged that she had been forced to work as a servant in the residences of a couple of assistant sub-inspectors.

When she was working at the police station Saturday the home guard had been asked to go out on duty. Upset over this, she went straight to the Collectorate, poured kerosene on her body and was about to carry out the act of self-immolation.

When asked, Sadar police station IIC Annapurna Behera said, “The allegations are baseless. She was never tortured or mentally harassed. A complaint was made to the SP regarding her absence from duty Friday. Her act and allegations are deliberate,” he added.
