Woman in labour pain denied bed, delivers on hospital’s verandah

Keonjhar: A woman was made to deliver her child on the verandah of the Keonjhar district hospital (DHH) after she was denied a bed there Thursday night.

The woman, hailing from Asanabahala village in Anandapur sub-division, was admitted to the DHH after she experienced labour pain, by her husband Sama Guya, around 7pm Thursday.

The woman who could barely move waited at the veranda and delivered a baby boy at around 3am.

The couple also alleged that the hospital staff charged them Rs 700 for providing post-delivery treatment.

“Although my wife was going through acute labour pain, we were denied a bed. The doctor stated that there was still time for her to deliver,” alleged Guya.

Chief district medical officer (CDMO) Swapneswar Gadanayak said the woman has been allotted a bed and her condition was stable now. “An inquiry has been ordered to find out why the delivery took place in the veranda. Action will be taken against those found guilty,” Gadanayak said.
