Bhubaneswar: A woman was allegedly murdered by her husband and in-laws for dowry in Odisha’s Nayagarh district, police said Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Phina Pradhan (32), daughter of Panchu Pradhan of Itamati village.
Phina married Rocky Pradhan (39) from the same village in 2015. They have a six-year-old child.
Since the marriage, Rocky and his family members were physically and mentally torturing Phina for dowry, alleged the deceased’s mother Panchu Pradhan.
The mother of the deceased alleged that Rockey and his family members have killed his daughter as she was unable to pay them Rs 2 lakh.
“Upon getting information, I reached her in-law’s house and fainted after seeing her body. When I regained my senses, I found her final rites had already been performed,” he alleged.
Phina’s mother said, “Marriage of Rocky’s younger brother was held recently and his wife brought more dowry than Phina. So, they started demanding an additional Rs 2 lakh from us. But we are unable to fulfill their demand. So, they killed my daughter.”
A police official said that she was killed June 19 night; and without informing the police, her in-laws took her to the cremation ground and performed the last rites in haste with an intention to destroy evidence.
As per an FIR lodged by the victim’s father, a case has been registered at Itamati Police Station.
Based on the FIR, police arrested accused Rocky Pradhan, said the police official.
