Khunta: A woman was allegedly killed over dowry at Purunabaripada under Khunta police limits in Mayurbhanj district Saturday. Police arrested the woman’s husband and father-in-law and produced them in a court Sunday.
According to reports, Bhagawati Behera (21) of Bhimpur in Balasore was married to Khirod Sahu of Purunabaripada about six months ago. During the marriage, dowry was given by the bride’s side to the groom’s family.
However, a few days later, her father-in-law Chhachindra Sahu started torturing Bhagawati physically and mentally, it was alleged.
In April 2018, she went to her maternal uncle’s house and revealed about the torture she was being subjected to.
Saturday afternoon, Chhachindra allegedly slapped Bhagawati when the latter made a little delay in serving him lunch. The women died instantly on the spot. Then, the father-son duo tried to give the incident a colour of suicide. They hanged the body with a saree.
However, during police investigation, the accused admitted to the crime.
