Woman loses eyesight allegedly due to faulty treatment at Cuttack nursing home

Cuttack:  The husband of a woman, who lost her vision completely after an operation, alleged that his wife lost her eyesight due to faulty treatment at a nursing home in Mangalabag of Cuttack town.

Following the complaint from Alekh Rout, a resident of Dhainpur under Athgarh subdivision in Cuttack district, the police registered a case and launched an investigation.

According to the complaint, Sulochana Rout had a vision problem in her left eye.  Later she complained of losing vision gradually in her right eye as well. Later, she was taken to LV Prashad Eye Hospital. After treatment, her condition improved.

However, last month she complained of pain in her right eye. Her husband Alekh admitted her at Sahara Nursing Home December 19 and an operation was carried out December 27.

When the bandage was removed, she complained that she could not see anything.

When asked, nursing home manager Krushnachandra Mohanty said that she had already lost her vision when she was admitted.

“Before the surgery, we told them that the operation might either bring her lost vision in right eye or it may damage the eye fully,” he said, adding that they had also laid out a condition that the nursing home would not be held responsible for any damage thereof.

“We carried out the operation only after the patient’s son Gangadhar Rout signed his consent letter,” he said.
