Basta: In a tragic road mishap, a woman and her minor daughter were killed after they were mowed down by a speeding oil tanker near Katipola on National Highway-60 under Basta police limits in Balasore district Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Muni Tudu (50) and her daughter Shanti Tudu (12).
Eyewitnesses said that the mother-daughter duo was going on foot when the accident took place. An oil tanker heading from Kolkata to Ganjam hit them near Katipola. Both died on the spot. On being informed the police reached the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem.
Immediately after the accident, tension gripped the area as local people gathered at the spot and demanded exemplary punishment for the driver. They also demanded compensation for the family of the deceased.
The cops have arrested the driver. According to the police, the driver was in an inebriated state.
