Rourkela: The city police here arrested Wednesday a woman for allegedly impersonating herself as an IPS officer in Basanti Colony. The accused has been identified as Sarmistha Behera. She is a resident of Dhamnagar locality of Bhadrak district. The woman had allegedly defrauded the owner of a motorcycle showroom at Basanti Colony in this city by posing as an IPS officer.
The owner said the woman dressed up in police attire including a holster with a gun reached at the motorcycle showroom and introduced herself as an IPS officer, August 11. She expressed her desire to purchase a Royal Enfield ‘Bullet’ bike. She then produced an IPS ID card and other documents required to buy the two-wheeler. During the sale procedure, the woman also gave the name of a finance company from which she was taking a loan to buy the bike. She handed over two blank cheques to the owner of the showroom. She also paid Rs 25,000 in cash and left with the bike. The price of the two-wheeler was Rs 1,90,000.

However, when the time came to cash the cheques, the showroom owner found out that the finance company mentioned in the form did not exist. So a complaint was lodged on the matter at the police station here.
Based on the complaint, police launched an investigation. They first found the woman by tracking her mobile. They conducted a raid on the rented premises where the woman was staying. The cops seized a khaki uniform, a fake identity card with the IPS logo, other fake documents and a toy gun. Police also confiscated several photographs with the woman in police attire. They also seized the bike and arrested her. The police managed to locate the woman by tracking her mobile number.
