Woman receives 30 stitches after croc attack

Kendrapara: A woman sustained grievous injuries after she was attacked by a crocodile while she had gone fishing in a river at Barakolikhola village under Mahakalapara block in Kendrapara district Saturday.

She has been identified as Mani Dhaudia (45).

According to reports, Mani along with other women of her village had gone for fishing in in Tubikhola river which is a tributary of Mahanadi.

From nowhere, a crocodile got caught in her net and attacked her. Lucky for her, other women rushed to her rescue and pulled her out from the river after hearing her screams.

She was then rushed to the Lighthouse preliminary health centre (PHC). Later, she was shifted to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) where she had to undergo 30 stitches on both of her thighs.

Assaults by the reptiles and retaliatory attacks by the residents have become a regular feature in this part of the state. The conflict and consequent loss of human lives are most frequently recorded during the monsoon and winter months. Most often, the mishaps occur when the victims intrude into the animal’s habitats for illegal fishing and poaching.
