Woman, son killed as car hits scooter in Ganjam

Berhampur: A woman and her son were killed after a speeding car hit their scooter in front of MKCG Medical College and Hospital on the National Highway-16 here in Ganjam district, late Wednesday night.

The deceased were identified as Sitamma Patra (55), and her son Rama Chandra Patra (36), from Ankuli area in the city.

Police seized the bodies which were identified by the deceased woman’s brother M Niranjan on the Hospital premises in the presence of police, Thursday. A case was registered in this connection and the car driver Jyoti Ranjan Mohapatra of Alakapuri area in the city was detained and questioned at the police station in this connection.

The mishap occurred when Rama Chandra with his mother on pillion was leaving the MKCG Medical College and Hospital after visiting his sister who was undergoing treatment in the hospital. They were coming out of the hospital on a scooter when a speeding car hit their two-wheeler just in front of the gate.

The impact of the collision was so strong that the two were flung off their vehicle and crash-landed on the road and the road divider was damaged. Critically injured, the two were rushed back to the hospital where doctors pronounced them brought dead. Traffic police personnel seized both vehicles and launched an investigation.

Notably, five persons have died so far during last one month under this traffic police limit in Silk City.
