Woman’s death in road mishap triggers tension

Ganjam: Tension prevailed after a woman was killed in a road mishap on National Highway-16 near Puintola village under Ganjam police limits Tuesday.

The deceased Apsari Nanda (61), wife of Yudhistir Nanda, was on her way to her farmland when a Jeypore bound passenger bus from Berhampur hit her on the highway. Profusely bleeding, she died on the spot. Her death sparked tension among the locals as they rushed to the spot and staged a road blockade.

The agitation threw traffic out of gear with hundreds of vehicles left stranded on the highway for over an hour. On being informed, Ganjam police led by IIC Sudam Mallick and revenue officials rushed to the spot and tried to placate the agitating villagers.

The protestors relented after the bus owner assured to give Rs 2 lakh compensation to the deceased’s kin. The deceased kin were also handed over Rs 10,000 from the district Red-Cross fund. Later, police registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem.
