Woman’s half-burnt body recovered from bathroom

Rourkela: Mystery shrouded the death of an elderly woman whose half-burnt body was found in the bathroom of her house at Basanti Colony in the Steel City in Sundargarh early Saturday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Saraswati Maharana (62). Sources said Saraswati’s son and daughter-in-law were out of the city when the incident took place at 6 am.

His two granddaughters Shibani (22) and Bhabani (21), who were present in the house at that time, said electric short circuit might have led to the death of Saraswati. However, mystery deepens as a kerosene bottle was found besides the dead body.

On a tip-off, police reached the spot and began an investigation into the incident. “After completion of the probe, it will be clear whether it is a case of murder or suicide,” said a police official.
