Women and motorbikes: 7 actresses who defied the stereotype

A real-life superbike enthusiast, John Abraham, will once again get to live his dream on screen in Rensil D’Silva’s yet-untitled film that revolves around motorbikes. The actor was earlier seen flaunting a Suzuki Hayabusa in the 2004 action thriller ‘Dhoom’.

While our heroes have time and again sported motorcycles on screen, be it Jackie Shroff in ‘Hero’ (1983), Ajay Devgan in ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ (1991), Aamir Khan in ‘Ghulam’ (1998) or Abraham and Hrithik Roshan in the ‘Dhoom’ series, there are a few actresses who too have defied the stereotype and rode motorbikes in films.

Orissa POST takes a look at some actresses who rode the mean machine in Hindi films.

Hema Malini

Hema Malini (Naseeb; 1981): Think of Hema Malini and the first thing that comes to mind is ‘Dream Girl’. Known for her dancing skills and terrific on-screen chemistry with Dharmendra, Hema gave her fans a pleasant surprise when she rode a bike, while Amitabh Bachchan, the angry young man, rode pillion.

Reena Roy

Reena Roy (Sanam Teri Kasam; 1981): Reena Roy was an ideal combination of beauty and boldness. And that reflected in the roles she played. It was a treat to the eyes, watching the ravishing actress riding a Royal Enfield in ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’.

Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor (Golmaal 3; 2010 and Udta Punjab; 2016): Filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s penchant for action made him convince Kareena Kapoor to ride a motorbike in ‘Golmaal 3’. Bebo was seen repeating the act in the controversial ‘Udta Punjab’ movie.

Katrina Kaif (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara; 2011): Known for playing glamorous roles, Katrina Kaif has won millions of hearts with her stunning looks. The actress left her fans awestruck when she rode a Royal Enfield Bullet 500 in ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’.

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut (Tanu Weds Manu; 2011): Kangana, who has emerged as an acting powerhouse within a short span of time, has always been known for doing the unconventional. The National Award-winning actress was seen riding a Royal Enfield Bullet in ‘Tanu Weds Manu’.

Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi; 2008 and Jab Tak Hai Jaan; 2012): Much like husband Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma too never fails to entertain her fans. The model-turned-actress was seen riding a Suzuki GSR 600 in her debut film ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. And guess who rode pillion? It was none other than the dashing Shah Rukh Khan. Mrs Kohli was once again seen riding a Royal Enfield Thunderbird in Yash Chopra’s swansong Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

Shraddha Kapoor

Shraddha Kapoor (Ek Villain; 2014): Who can forget the bike race between Jackie Shroff and Shakti Kapoor in Subhash Ghai’s classic ‘Hero’! Thirty one years down the line, Shakti’s daughter Shraddha Kapoor took up the challenge of riding a bullet in ‘Ek Villain’. And much like her father, Shraddha too came out with flying colours.
