The island of Okinoshima is located midway between the south-western main island of Kyushu and the Korean peninsula. UNESCO has identified it as a ‘World Heritage Site’. Strangely, however, women are forbidden to set foot on the island. Men also have to follow strict rules to visit the island.
This island is spread is over 700 square metres. Women are not allowed to visit the place due to religious restrictions. One of the reasons for the ban is due to ‘Shintoism’ which states menstrual blood defiles sacred places.
According to reports, before entering the island men must observe centuries-old rituals, including removing their clothes and undergoing ‘misogi’ – bathing naked in the sea to rid themselves of impurities.
No mementos, including small objects such twigs, pebbles and blades of grass, can be taken. Only 200 people are allowed to visit the year annually and then they have to take a vow to keep their visit a secret.
