Women protest against liquor trade in Mayurbhanj

Rairangpur:  With the authorities failing to curb liquor trade, women from Shaktimayi Mahila Sangathan of Mundathakura village under Bijatala block in Mayurbhanj district held a protest rally Tuesday.

The women of the group have formed a special team to stop the menace in the locality. Amidst allegations of administrative inaction against the liquor traders, they demanded the immediate closure of a foreign liquor shop at Mundathakura and Bantali chowk here.

The women demanded the immediate closure of the liquor shop. They further reiterated that they will strengthen their agitation further until the shop is closed down. A petition on this context was also submitted to Rairangpur excise department.

The protest underscores a rising tide against alcohol in the state where the government is encouraging liquor sales to rake in more revenue. Women are at the forefront of this spirited fight, trying to save their families from the rampant liquor scourge. Anti-alcohol campaigners say most of these protesters are wives of daily wage workers, marginal farmers, and village artisans who spend a substantial amount of their income on liquor.

Besides getting addicted, the men’s indulgence is ruining families — especially poor households.
