XIM in Rourkela meets RSP hurdles

Bhubaneswar, August 22: Plans to set up a second Xavier Institute of Management (XIM) in Orissa, proposed in Rourkela, have hit the hurdles after the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) put forth its conditions and queries before the Xavier University (XU).
The state government has earlier stated that RSP will collaborate with XU for establishment of a second campus of XIM in Rourkela. In a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in March regarding this, it was decided that RSP would provide Rs 120 crore along with 30 acres of land for the proposed XIM Rourkela (XIMR).
Meanwhile, RSP has put forth its conditions for its collaboration, which includes reservation of up to 25 per cent seats at XIMR for the children of RSP employees. There should be at least one representative from RSP in the XIMR board, said the steelmaker.
Further, RSP stated that the 30 acres of land required for the establishment of XIMR would be surrendered to the state government on requisition. RSP also queried whether XU needed Rs 120 crore for construction of the campus at once or within four to five years.
“The state government has agreed on setting up of the second XIM in Orissa. However, as the campus is coming up in tripartite collaboration, the process is facing hurdles. We have asked XU to clarify to RSP on their queries and conditions, after which the work on the campus will be expedited,” said an official of the higher education department.
