Yaas effect: Rains start in a number of districts

Bhubaneswar: With the cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ moving north-northwestwards at a speed of about four kmph, the effect is being felt in many parts of Odisha. A large number of districts have already started experiencing rainfall due to the impact of ‘Yaas’ which is likely to take the shape of a severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 to 40 hours.

The five districts under high alert zone, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Balasore, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj have already been witnessing drizzling accompanied by light gusts of wind.

According to the latest bulletin (2:30 pm) issued by IMD, New Delhi, many places in coastal Odisha is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall while some places will face heavy rainfall. The districts that will reel under heavy rainfall are Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore.

The cyclonic storm lay centered over eastcentral Bay of Bengal near latitude 16.5°N and longitude 89.6°E, about 630 km north-northwest of Port Blair (Andaman Islands), 520 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 620 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha) and 610 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal) at 11:30 am May 24.
