Young engineer leaps to death from City high-rise

Bhubaneswar: A 23- year-old man, an engineer by training, ended his life by allegedly jumping from the terrace of an eight-storied building in Kharavela Nagar area here early Tuesday. IIC, Kharavela Nagar police station, Rajanikanta Mishra said that residents of Chandrama Apartments, near Master Canteen Square, heard a loud thud at around 10 am. Upon inquiring, they found Ronit Jena, who lived alone in a flat on the fourth floor of the building, lying in a pool of blood on the ground. It is suspected that he had taken the leap from the terrace, causing his death instantaneously. Mishra said Ronit, a native of Kendrapara district, was living in the rented accommodation for over a week. “We are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind the extreme step by the young engineer.

However, the deceased’s family members have claimed that he slipped into depression recently after ending his relationship with a woman from Berhampur,” Mishra said. The IIC said Ronit came across the woman while both were studying Computer Science engineering at a private college in Berhampur. They became close afterwards. Ronit used to extend financial support to the woman during her needs, Mishra said.

Meanwhile, speaking to media, Ronit’s father said sometime back, he (Ronit) had spent a lot of money on the woman’s hospitalisation. “Ronit got a job in a private company in Bhubaneswar around a week ago after clearing the interview. Thereafter, he went to Berhampur to meet the woman and informed her about his new job.

However, Ronit’s friends told me that the meeting went awry after the woman said she wanted to end the relationship. Following this, Ronit locked himself up in the flat and did not pick up our calls for two-three days,” he added. Mishra said the body was handed over to the family members Tuesday evening after autopsy.
