Bhandaripokhari: A youth of Bhandaripokhari block in Bhadrak district has designed a bicycle that runs on solar power. The bicycle runs 30 km per hour which is expected to bring a revolution in the bicycle segment.
Rajesh Nayak, a native of Kulana village of Tesinga panchayat, has completed diploma in electrical engineering. Rakesh’s father Subansh Nayak, a farmer, could not afford a motorcycle for him because of the spiraling prices of fuel. His father was upset whenever he saw Rakesh riding a bike. This drove Rakesh to innovate something. He explored on various ways to harness solar energy to make the bicycle riding easier.
His family and father helped him in his research that lasted for two months. The bicycle is fitted with a solar panel which will help run it during the day time. A battery is there, which will supply power to the bicycle at night.
Rakesh has spent about Rs 13,000 in fixing this solar system in his bicycle.
“The battery is capable of propelling the bicycle for 30 km,” said an elated Rakesh. He said he has been receiving accolades from various quarters for the innovation.
He has uploaded this solar-fuelled bicycle on social media, after which people from various areas have been making a beeline for his village to see the innovation.
The innovation has relieved the pressure on bicycle riders and is eco-friendly. He said if the government helps him, he can do more research on it and make it more attractive. Local leaders and people of engineering fraternity have greeted Rakesh for his feat.
