Youth dies of electrocution

Bhanjanagar: Palpable tension erupted at Bhanjanagar area after a youth was electrocuted after coming in contact with a live wire here in Ganjam district Friday.

Irate locals placed the body on Berhampur-Bhanjanagar main road and caused a road blockade. They alleged negligence by the electricity department and demanded necessary compensation for the bereaved family and action against those responsible for his death.

Vehicular movement on the road was hit following the agitation as the villagers burnt tyres and obstructed the road. Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the road for hours.

The deceased was identified as Khadala Bhuiyan of Bhaliakhai village under Bhanjanagar police limits. Sources said, an electric wire of a transformer, installed near the village had snapped. Despite repeated pleas to repair the wires, the local electricity department paid no heed.

Accidentally, Bhuiyan came in contact with the live wire and was electrocuted. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, the doctors declared him ‘brought dead’.

“Had, the electricity department officials repaired the wires earlier; our brother would have not died today. So, we demand action against those responsible for our brother’s death,” the angry villagers said.

The agitation continued till the filing of this report.
