Berhampur, August 7: A youth, who was detained by Baidyanathpur police for the last 10 days, attempted to commit suicide by drinking phenyl Friday.
The youth identified as Pradip Badatya (26), of Burupada village under Hinjilikatu police station, who worked in a hotel here, alleged that police were not disclosing the reason behind detaining him even after his several requests.
Baidyanathpur police picked up Pradip from the hotel 10 days ago and since then he was detained.
A few days ago, police had called the hotel owner to the police station and discussed with him. Later, Pradip asked police the reason behind his detention. But, police did not give any satisfactory reply.
He said he lost his mental balance after staying so long in the police station. Friday noon, he felt thirsty and drank water from a pot in the police station. He saw a phenyl bottle near the pot and drank the content.
A constable who noticed it snatched the bottle from him and informed others. He was rushed to the MKCG hospital along with a minor boy to take care of him. Hospital sources stated that he was out of danger. The minor boy also alleged that police detained him without showing any reason.
However, no senior official of the police station clarified on the issue yet.
