Patnagarh: A biker sustained severe injuries after a constable, who was part of a Patnagarh police team carrying out a ‘drink and drive’ checking, hit him with his baton Sunday evening.
The injured biker, who has been identified as 30 years old Deepankar Panda of Rugudipada in Bolangir town, was rushed to the Patnagarh sub divisional hospital and is learnt to be undergoing treatment there.
The police’s ‘drink and drive’ checking was being carried out near the Patnagarh-Rampur petrol pump. Just at that time, Deepankar was heading from Patnagarh to Bolangir on his bike. The police on duty signaled him to stop at the checking point. Deepankar, who did not wear helmet, accelerated his bike and tried to speed past the checking point, instead. Seeing this, a constable waved his baton that hit Deepankar.
The hit was so severe that he was bleeding profusely. In spite of that, he was riding the bike till being spotted by two persons travelling in a car at Ulba. They got him admitted at Patnagarh sub divisional hospital.
When asked, Patnagarh inspector-in-charge (IIC) K. Priyanka said the youth was driving fast while the checking was going. It was when a constable was trying to stop him, he, instead of obliging, attempted to run his bike into him. In the process, the constable’s stick may have hit him.
